April Fool’s Day blunder temporarily damages borrowers’ credit

An undisclosed number of HSBC bank customers apparently saw their credit scores briefly tumble because of a credit reporting error that occurred April 1.

This was no April Fool’s Day prank: Credit bureau Experian says an “isolated administrative error” altered the information on some HSBC customers’ credit reports. According to an MSNBC report, that “glitch” in Experian’s credit reporting “temporarily torpedoed an undisclosed number of consumers’ credit scores.” MSNBC added that HSBC customers who pay for credit monitoring services became aware of the error after they received alerts about a sudden fall in their credit scores.

Borrowers weren’t laughing.

HSBC offers hybrid for cardholders who go green

HSBC credit card users who register their accounts for online access and/or elect to receive paperless statements will be entered into a sweepstakes to win a 2008 Saturn AURA Hybrid. “The HSBC Simply Green Sweepstakes is a way of saying thank you to our customers for going green, and further leverages HSBC’s commitment to offer environmental-friendly products and services to its customers,” according to an HSBC press release. The sweepstakes runs from Sept. 1 through Nov. 17, 2008.

Credit card arbitration lawsuit resurrected

The Wall Street Journal reported that an appeals court on Friday reinstated a 2005 lawsuit charging some of the leading U.S. credit card issuers with breaking the law by forcing credit card users to sign away their right to bring complaints to court by including arbitration-only clauses in cardholder contracts.

Leo DiCaprio pushes green credit card

During his first visit to Hong Kong, DiCaprio combined his roles as Hollywood star and environmental activist in promoting a line of “green” credit cards from banking giant HSBC. “The green card is made of environmentally friendly materials and uses digital bills to cut down paper consumption,” explains Website ecorazzi.com. “Every transaction will also contribute to a local environmental protection project.”
