Discounted Uber and Lyft rides: Your card can be your ticket

Jeff Herman

Whether you’re dashing to the airport or booking a ride from a holiday party, current Uber and Lyft promotions with some card issuers can save you while getting you where you’re going.

In some cases, the savings can be really big.

For example, American Express cardholders can get two free Uber rides (up to $65 each) from 11 airports. The airports: JFK and LaGuardia in New York City, O’Hare and Midway in Chicago, Las Vegas, Boston, Dulles and Ronald Reagan in Washington, D.C., Seattle-Tacoma, George Bush Intercontinental in Houston, and Newark in New Jersey.

How it works: Enter code AMEXAIRPORT in Uber app before requesting a ride, and select an American Express card for payment. Rides must be completed before Dec. 31.

If you’re not flying in or out of one of those 11 airports, don’t have an American Express card or prefer Lyft, any cardholder using the ride-booking service for the first time will get $55 in Lyft Credit to use on your first 11 rides.

Some other card issuer specials and discounts with Uber and Lyft that could save you a bit during the holidays:

American Express cardholders can earn 2x Membership Rewards points for every $1 spent on Lyft (runs through Dec. 31, 2016) or Uber. AmEx cardholders can use points to pay for Uber rides.

Capital One + Uber: Quicksilver and QuicksilverOne cardholders get $15 in Uber Credits after using their cards to pay for nine rides, through March 2017.

Chase + Uber: Chase cardholders can get their first ride free (up to $30). Must take ride by Dec. 31. Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders earn 3x points on ride-booking services and taxis

Citi ThankYou Premier and Citi ThankYou Preferred cardholders who are new Lyft users get up to $15 off their first ride, says Gwendolyn Belomy, Lyft communications manager. Citi ThankYou Premier cardholders also can earn points on their Lyft rides, as ride-booking services are included travel-related category of purchases worth 3 points for every $1 spent. Promotion runs through Feb. 28, 2017.
