Emily’s list: Cookies and credit card dough edition

Little did I know my cookie cravings would put me in the middle of a huge fight over big dough.

I like my local baker, who sells delicious gourmet cookies. But I just want one at a time, and I want to buy it with a credit card since I tend not to carry much cash. The baker doesn’t want to sell me just one if I use a card because every time my card is swiped, card processing fees eat his profits just as I’m taking a bite of his cookie.

So I’m in a cookie quandary.

Prepaid credit cards can be a good starting place if you have bad credit and can’t qualify for a standard card. But I have concerns that the Control Card, a new prepaid credit card co-branded with BET Networks, is so fee-laden that it may do more harm than good.

Barely over the border foreign transaction fees

I leave late next week for my delayed honeymoon, and we’ll be spending time in both Seattle and Vancouver. It’s funny–at first, I figured I would just use my normal debit card in Canada. We both use currency called dollars, and so many things about the countries are so similar. I quickly realized that while the value is very similar, a Canadian dollar is still different from an American dollar, and I would incur a foreign transaction fee for every payment.
